When it comes to air-ride suspension, they come in several styles for both OE replacement and aftermarket upgrades. Some systems use an integrated air spring and shock absorber that replaces your customer's metal springs with pressure-adjustable air springs (i.e., airbag). Using correctly sized air springs and properly calibrated shock absorbers offers ride characteristics similar to coilovers.

An air-suspension system consists of many different components. Components include an air compressor, air springs, pneumatic solenoid valves, height sensors, electronic control unit, air reservoir, air lines, pressure sensor and temperature sensor. The system may be designed for the rear air suspension only or for the entire vehicle.


While air-suspension systems are mostly used on high-end European cars, manufacturers have adapted them to many other vehicles such as SUVs and pickups to improve ride comfort and functionality. OEMs also discovered that air ride could improve fuel economy by lowering the car at highway speeds to reduce the drag coefficient.

The 8 steps to install a New Air Spring on Your Vehicle
Replacing a broken air spring may require the help of a mechanic, but you can cut down your expenses by simply installing it yourself.
1: Parking your car on a level surface then using the floor jack to lift it up. Place the jack stands underneath the vehicle for support.
2: Remove the wheels by detaching its lug nuts one by one. Use a wrench for this procedure.
3: Deflate the air spring by opening the air mouth on the top.
4: Detach the set of fasteners that secure the air spring in place. You can generally find these bolts on the control arm and under the hood. Keep in mind that the set of procedures for removing an air spring vary for each car, so make it a point to consult your owner's manual to see exactly how yours is removed.
5: Remove the old air spring away from the shock carefully. If needed, use a spring compressor to make the remove easier. You may reuse the O rings connecting the air spring to the shock.
6: Put the new air spring on the place where you removed the old one.
7: Reconnect it to the shock using the O rings you removed earlier. Make sure you apply lubricant on them before putting them back.
8: Reattach all the components that you removed. Recheck if there are no missing bolts, nuts and fittings.A strut is a major structural part of a suspension. It takes the place of the upper control arm and upper ball joint used in conventional suspensions. Because of its design, a strut is lighter and takes up less space than the shock absorbers in conventional suspension systems.
An Air Struts
A struts perform two main jobs. First, struts perform a damping function. A piston is attached to the end of the piston rod and works against hydraulic fluid to control spring and suspension movement. Just like shock absorbers, the valving generates resistance to forces created by the up and down motion of the suspension. Also like shock absorbers, a strut is velocity sensitive, so that the amount of resistance can increase or decrease depending on how fast the suspension moves.
A struts also perform a second job. Unlike shock absorbers, struts provide structural support for the vehicle suspension, support the spring, and hold the tire in an aligned position. Additionally, they bear much of the side load placed on the vehicle's suspension. As a result, struts affect riding comfort and handling as well as vehicle control, braking, steering, wheel alignment and wear on other suspension.
